August 17 – Departed Seattle
Fire Drill and Safety Briefings with Captain Adam Seamans, Chief Mate Diego Mellon, Second Mate John Hamill, and Third Mate Elliott Salyer
Descriptive Geology with Mentor and P.I. Jon Lewis
Local Tectonics – Jon and Mentor Kris Ludwig provided an overview of the geology and tectonic setting of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Discussed hazards including great earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and landslides and subduction zones in other parts of the world.
Vents – Students simulated a short “dive” in the Alvin submarine with Kris to learn about conducting marine geology research in the deep sea. The group compared observations of geological samples collected from hydrothermal vents at the Juan De Fuca Ridge in the Northeast Pacific and the Lost City Hydrothermal Field near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
August 18 – First Full Day at Sea
Investigative Science/”Checks Mystery” with Karen
Intro to Marine Sediments – Students learned about global marine sediments and their origins by completing an exercise led by graduate student and Mentor Raquel Bryant.
Career Exploration/process of science – The group learned about the process of science by mapping the career paths of several of the shipboard mentors.
High winds and rough seas! Most were battling seasickness, so afternoon and evening programming was postponed. Stalwarts Megan Byers, Miguel Moravec, Sherese Morgan, and Abby Edwards used the time to talk with crew members about their work, write and reflect, and uncover some of the ship’s secrets.
