To start the day off, the group analyzed a set of data that the instruments on the ship have been collecting. I was given sea surface temperature (SST). After graphing the data, a spike showed that there had been a slight increase followed by a decrease in SST as we crossed from greener waters into deep blue waters while leaving port. This color change along with the temperature change raised a lot of questions. I decided to further explore this and spent most of my day plotting and analyzing data sets. I was trying to find an explanation for the drastic color change we all witnessed. My working hypothesis was that this change in color was the result of a change in depth. To test this, I plotted the bathymetry data to determine if the depth changed at the time we went over the line. I did find a spike that would indicate a depth change! However, I was later able to to determine that this spike was noise on the machine. Although disappointed, I am going to continue with the data until I have exhausted the known evidence.
