What a great first full day on the R/V Hugh R. Sharp. We are nearing the southern tip of Florida and plan to be hitting the Gulf Stream current around 0700. It is really interesting to actually get a chance to sample the waters in the Gulf and ID so many different species of phytoplankton. I can now put what I have been shown in textbooks and field guides to actual samples under the microscope. The best part is finding so many “new” species that I can add to my notes for school.
During my shift last night at 0400, two majestic spotted dolphins were playfully swimming along the boat right where I was taking some water samples. It was quite an experience to see two dolphins playing and jumping out of the water in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico under nothing but the moon and the stars. It is something I will truly never forget.
Well, we are only a few hours away from the Dry Tortuga Islands (Arrrrghhhhh!), so I better get some sleep before my next shift.
Cheers,
Nathaniel C.
