I am determined to make sense of all the terminology, jargon, and namesakes for everything on and about this ship by the end of this expedition. Starting with the name Sikulaiq, which means, “Young Sea Ice” in Native Alaskan. The ship was built with the purpose of breaking up and traversing through that young sea ice. We sleep in our Staterooms, eat in the Mess, go down for projects in the Main Lab. MidRat is not as terrifying as it sounds, it’s just the midnight ration fridge where we keep beverages cold but also the midnight rations (meals) for the night crew. The Bridge is where the Captain, Diego, 2nd Mate Otto (who also doubles at the Medical Officer), and the 3rd Mate Ian all take shifts steering and doing all the other duties to keep this Vessel chugging along.
