Shaun Shaver is the chief science officer aboard the Marcus G. Langseth and has been working on seismic vessels since 1982. In that time, he has visited 51 countries, made lasting friendships, and even had a marriage that produced a son. He first became interested in the ship industry at 19 years old through his stepbrother who spoke to him about the opportunity. A few calls later, Shaun was put on a track that would lead him to where he is now, 40 years later. As a chief science officer, Shaun is in charge of ensuring all scientific permits, equipment, and personnel are in proper order. His agenda is packed with meetings to finalize anything ranging from berth assignments to permits that encapsulate the science to be performed. After deploying equipment, it is not uncommon for Shaun and the vessel’s crew to engage in ping pong tournaments or card games to pass the time. When not at work, Shaun enjoys traveling within the US with his son and friends to go hunting, fishing, and overall traveling. As a true Texan, Shaun avoids the coldest of weather and prefers to visit areas where the sun is frequent and strong for most of his trips. After retiring within the next year, Shaun hopes to spend some time with his son traveling before he goes to college. With what an amazing job he did on our cruise, I’m sure Shaun will be missed dearly by all who work with him. Until next time, calm seas and fair skies on your future adventures Shaun.
