Matt McHugh was born and raised in Massachusetts. Following in the steps of his father and friends, he decided to attend the Massachusetts Maritime Academy studying engineering. From there, Matt worked for AmGen, a pharmaceutical company in Los Angeles, automating processes, streamlining workflows, and other very exciting projects.
Eventually, because he had gone to a maritime academy, Matt decided he might as well try working on a boat. He signed on to a drill ship, then to our beloved Langseth. After a taste of it, he’s determined that he doesn’t want to continue down the nautical path. The lifestyle is just really rough, the engineering is boring, and he doesn’t want to get trapped working on boats for the rest of his life. Matt plans to leave the industry as soon as his contract runs out in July and head back to Los Angeles to work in pharmaceuticals again. He really enjoys the creative side of that kind of work and the relaxed lifestyle as opposed to the dull yet hectic maintenance he currently deals with.
I’m really glad Matt could find time to meet with me. I’ve had a lot of experience with setbacks, “wrong” paths, and lessons learned, so it was so cool to see how Matt dealt with these challenges to find something that he really enjoyed. I also appreciated how he did try new things and was able to see that it wasn’t an avenue that he wanted to go down. Thanks Matt! And good luck!
