Stem Seas has been a fantastic adventure, and it’s only day two! We spent our Sunday evening meeting each other over dinner and discussing what we were most excited about this week. We went to a local pizza joint in Lewes and ordered WAY too much. We shared our majors and our interests. Many of us have never experienced anything like it. Monday morning, half of us went to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and the other half of us caught up on some sleep. I was happy to meet everyone and learn about where they had come from and what made them interested in stem seas. Luckily enough, we all clicked! It wasn’t long before we were sharing laughs. The whole team has been incredibly comforting and welcoming. Many of us did not feel the greatest due to seasickness, but the team gave us tips and tricks to help us get used to the moving ship.
On Tuesday, we woke up at 5:30 and had breakfast. The chef has been very accommodating to our wants and needs. After breakfast, we star gazed and then waited for the sun to peak over the horizon. It has been amazing to be able to look out and see the beautiful blue water. Midday, we took water samples in the ocean and measured the different depths, salinity, and temperature (CTD). We were able to throw out lines to fish as well. There’s so much to learn and even more to see.
