Expect the unexpected when on a ship. I was caught off guard when the drill sirens went off. During my first nap here on the R/V Sally Ride, drill sirens began to ring in pulses. The pulses determined what was happening. I heard more than 4 horn followed by a long horn. Which means, “ABANDON SHIP!!” . I felt slightly embarrassed because I got up so fast that I forgot I still had my pajamas pants on until I was out on the fore. Good thing style doesnt matter out at sea, especially when the ship is “going down”. We went over our safety procedures, and i then had time to change out of my PJs to more conventional pants that wouldn’t get wet out on deck.
The food has been saving my morale. Sea sickness is no joke out here. I wasn’t aware until today that having food while your sea sick actually helps! I’ve been appreciating everything the cooks have made even more for that. The taste alone is wonderful, but you can tell they put in a lot of care which makes it so much better. I also have been enjoying seeing everybody be kind with each other and checking in. Most folks have been getting hit today with sea sickness, so it was really nice seeing people offer to take care of plates left behind at the dinner table if they needed to leave for a moment. Its nice hanging out with a group of people who care for each other ![]()
There’s a lot more adventure waiting out there, and I am hopeful for all of us getting through this together. Signing off!
