Diversity plays a crucial role in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and taking the time to understand the essence and importance of diversity in these disciplines is imperative for creating inclusive environments and fostering innovation.
Historically, certain groups have been underrepresented in STEM fields, creating disparities in opportunities and outcomes.
Fortunately, programs like Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Student Experiences Aboard Ships (STEMSEAS) and Ambassadors for STEM Training to Enhance Participation (A-STEP) have made it their mission to eliminate barriers and provide support, mentorship, and resources to underrepresented individuals, ensuring equal access to educational and professional opportunities.
It is because of programs like STEMSEAS/A-STEP that I, a multi-ethnic woman in STEM, have the opportunity to participate in expeditions like NA150. Here on the E/V Nautilus, I, and every other individual onboard, have managed to cultivate an inclusive environment by valuing and respecting diverse perspectives, creating a sense of belonging, and combating bias and discrimination.
To further encourage these practices, organizations and institutions, like STEMSEAS and the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) have implemented a number of policies and initiatives, like Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (JEDI-A), that promote diversity and inclusion at all levels. By fostering a diverse range of perspectives and experiences, these programs encourage innovative thinking, resulting in the development of more comprehensive and effective solutions, as well as groundbreaking technologies.
Diversity is not only a moral imperative but also an engine of progress in STEM fields. Embracing diversity leads to better innovation, problem solving, and learning. By addressing underrepresentation and creating inclusive environments, we can cultivate a diverse STEM workforce that truly reflects and serves the needs of our society. It is our collective responsibility to champion diversity and ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to contribute and thrive in these vital fields.
Sailing with the E/V Nautilus has been such an incredible experience thus far, and I look forward to completing the rest of my journey with this amazing crew!
