YO YO YO! Welcome back to another blog by Ryan Mark Genova 🙂 Today we have a Day 6 filled with learning, interesting weather, and as always, some buss down food.
After a bit of tossing and turning at night, I awoke, grabbed my breakfast, and headed outside. Immediately, I felt a rush of chill air wash over me. As the days pass nearing Alaska, it has become increasingly colder, the winds stronger, and the ocean, well, less forgiving. Continuing to enjoy the rocking as we tilt to what seems like 90 degrees on each side!
The first presentation was a wonderful way to learn about the OpenRVDAS(research vessel data acquisition system). We learned about how readers, transforms, and writers create loggers and the importance of it. Understanding how Coroiolix is like the van and OpenRVDAS is the engine for data collection.
For lunch we had a delicious meal consisting of jalapeño poppers, pulled pork sandwiches, and fries which HIT THE SPOTTT. Never would have I expected to be eating such good food on a vessel like this, but boy I couldn’t be happier. I proceeded to just chill out on the O1 deck and really take on the sights. It felt like I was in How to Train Your Dragon and I was a viking entering a new land as we couldn’t see the horizon anymore due to immense fog on all sides.
After I left fantasy land I went down for the second presentation on Honeypots and system vulnerabilities when attacking a system. I learned how a honeypot consists of an attacker who is connected to the internet, that then proceeds to find the potential vulnerability(the honeypot) in a system, and then as they attempt to breach the firewall the users are notified of what is happening. It was intriguing to see a demonstration of how you attack a system and the ways to improve it after.
Following that I had a quick udon dinner, and then listened to the last presentation on different moorings and how precise things need to be on deck in order to have a good success rate. Even though the best learning opportunities are the times when things go wrong instead of right.
Overall, it was another fulfilling day filled with such interesting topics brought by incredibly knowledgeable people. I am very happy to be aboard this wonderful vessel and grateful for another day 🥂
That’s all for me on this trip, and I hope to see you guys again once more!
Signing off,
