My name is Matthew Mullens, I am an Industrial Engineering major currently at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. Today on May 12, 2016 the STEMSEAS crew learned about the different sediment types (Calcareous, Siliceous, Terrigenous, Glaciogenic, and deep-sea clay sediment) on the ocean floor and where they could typically be found. It was interesting to learn the reason why the ocean floor changes in texture and in composition for different reasons across the globe, and how most of the earth’s natural processes are tied together.
The STEMSEAS crew also looked at the working section of our 1st core piece and took samples out in order to further learn the composition of our core so that we may give it the appropriate name (I think we are still running some tests before we name it).
I had the opportunity to help assemble the gravity core for tomorrow’s events, so it should be good to go!
What I found pretty cool today was the smoothness of the water, we were at a point where there was very little wind and the ocean looked so calm and glassy. Almost lake-like. Also the clouds finally took a break for a couple hours today so that we could finally get a glimpse of the sun (we haven’t seen it in 3 days) but it was beautiful and I think it gave everybody some extra energy and put us in better spirits. Not that we we’re feeling bad, but you could imagine 2-3 days under the clouds can be a little gloomy.
Mainly I just look forward to seeing what we recover from our core tomorrow. Nothing today was really exciting in my opinion, but tomorrow should be cool/interesting.
