On this cruise, there are several jobs necessary to keep the ship moving at a steady pace. There are over 20 members of the crew working four hour shifts then eight hours off. I interviewed Adian about his role on the ship. Adian is a student intern in the engine room. He wants to start as a third mate within the next two years. From Washington, a coastal state, working on boats was a logical career path. Adian mostly wanted to become a ship engineer because of the good pay and good hours. He will eventually work about six months out of the year on cruises and rest the remaining months. As an intern through Scripps, he is working on research vessels. He hopes to work well now so that he can later get an actual job as a Scripps employee.
On this particular cruise, Adian works in the engine room, learning about all of the equipment, running errands for the chief engineer, and watching the third mate. His responsibilities right now include maintaining the boilers and he has control of the overhauling pumps. As an intern, Adian must do a year and a half of sailing time before he can work as a third mate. After he starts work as a third mate, he will work his way through the ranks with sea time. However, even though chief engineers receive more pay, right now he does not plan on becoming a chief engineer because of the extensive paperwork that comes with the job.
After the Revelle’s stop in Newport, Oregon, the ship continues into a port in Washington. Adian lives in the state and will be returning home for a brief period before going back to work.
