Leaving land for ten days my major concern was, “What am I going to be consuming?” I am a natural-born “foodie,” and I love to eat a lot of food during the day. Being born and raised on Oʻahu in Ewa Beach, I always was able to eat at the places I liked and find new hole-in-the-wall places to try, so not having control over what would be available to eat was scary. So, the hard truth that my favorite fast food restaurant and local eatery was not available at sea, hit hard.
When I woke up for the first time on the Kilo Moana, the first thing on my mind was breakfast. I went downstairs and was delighted by the smell of pancakes, French toast, hash browns, and more, which gave me hope. I was not disappointed as I dug into my first breakfast out at sea. It left me excited for the two other meals that day. Lunch was great as well but at this point of the trip, I’m not exactly sure what lunch was on the first day.
As with lunch that day, I’m not exactly sure what we had for the main course for dinner that night as well. But that doesn’t matter, as the main star of the show was the dessert. Sitting on the center table were rows of neatly plated, moist chocolate cakes topped with blueberries and strawberries, with a mousse-like buttercream frosting. It was small but the taste was powerful. I am an avid dessert foodie but for some reason, I didn’t think about the dessert on board – my mistake. Taking my first bite of this sweet dessert changed the perspective I had on the ship’s food. No longer was I worrying about the main courses being served, all I wanted to know was “What’s for dessert?”
