During the past week, I have been aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp sailing and collecting oceanographic information to advance our understanding of storm occurrences on the east coast. In my time aboard the ship I had great experiences interacting with the crew and learning about their work. And, it was a pleasure to learn about the members on our expedition team. It was an adjustment for me because I had not been on the ocean very much and during our timearound the Norfolk Canyon the seas were rough at times. But, rewarding because of the core samples that we were able to take and seeing the Sunfish was fascinating. Seeing nothing but the ocean on the horizon was unreal and to have the opportunity to spend time out there was amazing. We later headed out on the Chesapeake Bay which was calmer and were able to gather more cores as we went North. Unfortunately, our time was cut short because of an issue with the ship’s filtration system and we headed back out to the Atlantic Ocean for sometime. We could see dolphins traveling in pods and even a whale! But,all journeys come to an end and we are making port tomorrow October 10th, 2024. This experience has given me insight to life at sea and has helped advance my life through science, adventure, and chivalry. I am grateful for Stem Seas for giving me this experience and for everyone that played part in this exciting expedition.
