today Sat Oct 6th I, Sam Radcliffe, am blogging, a feat Ive been attempting since Wed Oct 3 due to a lack of internet connection. First of all it is this that strikes my interest, the lack of internet facility. The ship has a fast, hi-tec onboard internet connection system that allows communication within the ships boarders, but as far as communicating beyond the ship, speed just isn’t possible…Speaking of systems, there are many different systems that are used aboard R/V Sikuliaq from mechanical to electrical to scientific to social and they all work together in a way that allows this special vessel to operate. Since our departure late Tuesday night we have conducted CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) scans of the Berring Sea and grabbed sediment off the sea floor, as well as learned safety protocol and lessons on overcoming sea sickness from the crew. It takes many different skill sets from many different people to successfully run scientific operations at sea.
