Today marked the beginning of the end of our expedition. It is hard to believe that eight days. have already passed since we first stepped aboard the ship and began this journey. While there is still some time left before we return to shore, the reality that our expedition is coming to an end is starting to sink in. We began the morning with our lecture session, followed by a presentation from UNOLS. Learning about the different pathways and opportunities available through the academic research fleet was both informative and encouraging.
Throughout this trip, I have gained a much better understanding of the many careers and organizations that make oceanographic research possible. After the presentations, we headed up to the lounge for lunch. Today’s meal featured peanut noodles served with either grilled chicken or shrimp, accompanied by a vegetable mix. The food has been consistently excellent throughout the entire expedition, and I want to recognize the kitchen staff for all their hard work. Every meal has been something to look forward to, and their efforts helped make life aboard the ship feel comfortable and welcoming. Following lunch, we made our way downstairs to the main lab for Ana’s presentation. As the day progressed, we also learned that it was finally time to begin cleaning the lab spaces and our berthing areas.
Seeing equipment being organized and personal belongings being packed away made it clear that our time at sea is quickly ending. With the expedition winding down, I found myself reflecting on everything this experience has meant to me. One of the most valuable parts of this journey has been the people. I have enjoyed getting to know everyone onboard and building relationships with students, scientists, crew members, and instructors. Hearing everyone’s stories about how they found their way to sea has been incredibly inspiring. Although each person’s path was different, there were several common themes that appeared constantly: curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to keep learning. Those conversations have had a lasting impact on me.
Coming on this trip has given me renewed motivation to continue my education and pursue my goals. As a first-generation college student, there have been times when the journey has felt challenging, but hearing stories of perseverance from others reminded me that success is often built through determination and resilience. Knowing that many of the people I admire aboard this ship faced obstacles of their own has made their accomplishments feel more attainable and has encouraged me to keep moving forward. Of course, not all my favorite memories came from lectures and presentations. Some of the most meaningful moments happened during our downtime. Whether it was playing card games with members of the crew, going out to the deck to take photos, or gathering in the lounge to watch Fast & Furious movies, those experiences helped create a strong sense of community onboard.
As we prepare for the final days of the expedition, I already know there will be things I miss. I’ll miss the rhythm of life at sea, the daily excitement of learning something new, and the friendships that developed along the way. Most of all, I’ll miss being surrounded by people who are passionate about science, exploration, and sharing knowledge with others. While I am looking forward to returning home and sharing my experiences with family and friends, I am also grateful for everything this journey has taught me. The lessons from this expedition extend far beyond oceanography. They are lessons about community, perseverance, curiosity, and the importance of stepping outside of your comfort zone. As this chapter ends, I leave with new friendships, new knowledge, and a greater sense of confidence in the path ahead.
